The World Zionist Organization (WZO) was initiated by Theodore (Binyamin Ze'ev) Herzl and established on September 3, 1897, during the first Zionist Congress that convened in Basel, Switzerland. The WZO was founded as an umbrella organization, to unify the operation of all Zionist bodies around the world. The WZO aims to facilitate information about Israel in the diaspora; promote the elimination of antisemitism around the world; and advance Zionist education throughout the Jewish diaspora.
